What did the lives of Polish Jewish youth look like on the eve of the Holocaust? Drawing upon a treasure trove of letters, diaries, and autobiographies written by Polish Jewish youth in the 1930s, this lecture explores their dynamic and turbulent lives. Shedding light on a vital yet often neglected chapter in East European Jewish history, this presentation will shed light on the fervent efforts of Poland’s Jewish youth to determine, on their own terms, who they were, where they belonged, and what their future held in store.
Dr. Daniel Kupfert Heller is Kronhill Senior Lecturer in East European Jewish History at Monash University. He is the author of Jabotinsky’s Children: Polish Jews and the Rise of Right-Wing Zionism (Princeton University Press, 2017). Before his recent arrival in Melbourne, he was an assistant professor in Montreal, where he received McGill University’s top teaching prizes.
