Witness Performance is a new community focused online initiative developed to address the collapse in networks of critique and participation in the Victorian performing arts. It was developed by performance critic and poet Alison Croggon and playwright and theatre historian Dr Robert Reid. Witness is a structural intervention into the process of engaging with the performing arts in Melbourne, facilitating audience involvement through critique, feedback and conversation and thereby strengthening the systemic resilience of the local performance community infrastructure. In short, Witness provides a space for talking about the theatre weʻre seeing and encourages an atmosphere of contribution and contextualization for that conversation.
Dr Robert Reid is a freelance playwright, director, game designer and academic. He is Artistic Director of the Australian live games company, Pop Up Playground. He is currently writing a monthly series of interviews with Australian theatre makers from the last thirty years for the Australian Script Centre State of Play series. Pop Up Playground’s work has been presented at w00t festival in Copenhagen and Come Out and Play in New York. His plays have been produced internationally and have received several awards and nominations. “The Joy of Text” and “on the Production of Monsters,” were produced by Melbourne Theatre Company in 2011 and 2012.
