Expertise

Monash Gender and Family Violence Prevention Centre (GFVPC) provides crucial evidence bases for reforms aimed at effectively implementing more risk sensitive approaches to family violence and reducing the associated harms to women and children. For Monash GFVPC researchers, the elimination of family violence, intimate partner violence and violence against women has been a key focus of projects and outreach.

Monash GFVPC's expertise and extensive knowledge, in the fields of domestic and family violence (FV), policing and police training and education, has positioned it to successfully undertake diverse projects and to deliver on all tender requirements. Spanning work with a range of communities including the disability sector, LGBTIQ, women and men's groups, the team also holds a rare understanding to analyse and build awareness of diverse forms of family violence - critical to support cultural change. Many of their projects encompass both quantitative and qualitative methods for large-scale community engagement projects.

External research contracts

Founded in early 2016 as Focus Program and established as a Centre in 2018, Monash GFVPC has since attracted substantial funding from a range of bodies including the Australia Research Council, Department of Health and Human Services and Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety (ANROWS) to undertake a range of projects that have since provided key reports and policy recommendations in preventing family violence. Many of the projects have contributed key outcomes in response to the recommendations of the world-first Royal Commission into Family Violence (Victoria).

Stakeholder engagement

The team's research involves in-depth interviewing and focus group work with women and others impacted by family violence, specialist family violence sectors' workers, legal practitioners, police officers, primary service providers and policy stakeholders. Their work has consistently involved ensuring stakeholder participation and engagement in research and culture change with a range of organisations.

The team has several government appointments in a variety of capacities. These appointments exhibit the commitment that the team places on improving policy and the importance of practical research.
