December 2022
This month, our Centre Director Professor Jacqui True received AUD$ 35 million to establish a7-year Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the Elimination of Violence against Women (CEVAW). Prof True led this successful application together with 14 chief investigators at 7 Australian institutions including 5 colleagues at Monash, 17 partner investigators internationally and 32 partner organisations. Additionally, we hosted an international workshop on gender and violent extremism, attended the G20 in Bali, hosted Roya Hakakian for our Scholars at Risk webinar, and our Afghan Women at the Forefront of Climate Change publication was presented at COP27.

This month, we attended the Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) National Conference in Canberra, held a publication launch for 'Afghan Women at the Forefront of Climate Change' ahead of CoP27, were hosted by the Australian Institute of International Affairs for an event on Women Peace and Security in Afghanistan, and hosted the launch of Melissa Jardine’s latest book on Women, Policing and Security in Afghanistan.

This month, we celebrated Professor J. Ann Ticker’s Monash honorary doctorate conferral, launched our research brief on WPS in Afghanistan with the Malala Fund at the annual UNGA week, co-hosted a Social Sciences week webinar, and hosted a roundtable on women’s labour in Sri Lanka.

This month, we hosted Dr Laurence McKeown and Nicholas Rasmussen at the GPS Centre, held a webinar marking one year since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan as well as a joint event with the Centre for Development Economics and Sustainability providing a gender lens on pandemic recovery in Southeast Asia.

This month we launched with the Australian Feminist Foreign Policy Coalition our Issues Paper on Afghanistan and Women, Peace and Security: Betrayal or Renewal, which is generating impact in Australia and around the world. We also presented at the 2022 ASAA Conference, hosted Professor Jane Freedman for the seminar series and interviewed Farkhondeh Akbari for our researcher spotlight.

The GPS Centre hosted Dr Marta Havryshko and Dr Julia Zulver for two webinars this past month on sexual violence in Russia’s war in Ukraine and High-Risk Feminism in Colombia respectively. We also released two reports this month, one on Gender Military Advisors by Katrina Lee-Koo and Eleanor Gordon, and a second by a project team involving Samanthi Gunawardana.

This month we hosted a PhD student lunch to welcome our cohort back to campus, started a new project with FHI360 and USAID and published the final reports from our 2021 UN Women project. We also hosted Claudia Delfabro for our April Seminar and said farewell to our founding patron, Dr Sharman Stone.
