Welcome to School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics.
The School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics (LLCL) is a dynamic and diverse learning, teaching and research environment where students come to better understand the world they inhabit through the study of its languages, literatures and cultures. Whether you’re analysing the history of the English Language, Japanese anime, North Korean politics, Italian crime-fiction or the Renaissance sonnet, you will develop core skills in close reading and analysis, language proficiency, communication and intercultural competence. These will prepare you for further study or the world of work and equip you with vital skills as critical thinkers, active researchers and self-directed learners.
In the School of LLCL, we teach nine languages from introductory all the way through to proficient and advanced levels: four Asian (Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese and Korean), and five European (French, German, Italian, Spanish and Ukrainian). We offer majors in Literary Studies – including Creative Writing – and in Linguistics. We also provide Graduate Coursework MA programs in Interpreting and Translation Studies, Applied Linguistics and Tourism.
Our learning and teaching supplement traditional lectures and tutorials with cutting-edge online tools, enabling students to learn actively both in the classroom and beyond. Our teaching and research is actively integrated with our overseas campuses and offers a range of study abroad opportunities in Italy, Germany, Japan, Fiji, New Caledonia and beyond.
Our researchers are world leaders in their fields, and their work engages both scholarly communities and industry producing outcomes that have genuine impact.
Whether your interest lies in the analysis or writing of literature; the languages and cultures of Europe and Asia; or the histories, structures and functions of languages; we have a rich array of offerings to engage you.
As Head of the School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics, I encourage you to explore our website and I am very proud to welcome you to our school.
