The Master of Public Policy (MPP) is an innovative and flexible program drawing on the depth and expertise of a world class university, designed to build practical knowledge and skills for professionals in policy making and management across the spectrum of public sector activities.

This multi-disciplinary course will build your deep understanding of the politics and processes of policy formation, the delivery of policy programs, and the political and structural realities that influence decision-making.

And with international study opportunities and workplace experience with a strong practical emphasis on real world issues, it will provide you with a unique preparation to participate effectively in the global workplace, and in whatever sector you might choose to work.

Career outcomes

The Master of Public Policy equips you with the critical analytical, investigative and practical skills essential for leadership in a public policy career both domestically and abroad. You’ll be prepared to work in policy areas across both the public and private sectors, from government organisations, multi-nationals through to independent consultancies. The MPP will equip you with industry relevant specialist skills to prepare you for working and living in a world of constant technological, environmental, political and population change. The course is designed to ensure you will make an excellent contribution to your profession using the full range of skills to critically evaluate evidence, develop and support arguments, conduct research using a variety of methodological approaches, communicate effectively and understand the possibilities and challenges of public policy practice and reform.

Course structure

Designed to maximize flexibility, MPP Core Units in public management, political and intercultural communication, participatory leadership, policy analysis and governance provide essential theoretical and applied knowledge. And from there you can tailor the course to suit your career aspirations and interests. By combining the expertise of experienced public policy authorities from across the university (Social Sciences, Health, Law, Science, Urban Planning, Business and Economics) you’ll have the opportunity to use your course electives to complete a Public Policy Stream in one of the following areas:

  • Diplomacy and International Trade
  • Health
  • Organisational Leadership
  • Public Finance
  • Regulation
  • Social Policy
  • Sustainability and the Environment
  • Transport and Infrastructure
  • Urban Policy

Alternatively you may choose to complete a general stream across any of the above, or complete a research thesis, or take selected complementary elective units from any of the other Master’s by coursework degrees offered in the Faculty. 

To complete your studies you’ll undertake a capstone unit in the form of a professional internship, a research project or an international study tour.
