Monash Arts graduate named Walkley finalist for Student of the Year award
Monash Journalism graduate Matilda Boseley has been named a finalist for the 2019 Walkley Student of the Year.
Matilda is one of three students in Australia to score a finalist nomination for her outstanding work for Mojo News and The Age newspaper.
A former Mojo News student editor, Matilda enjoyed a successful 2018, combining her Mojo editorship with her breaking news role at The Age.
“Being nominated for the Walkey Student Journalist of the Year award is a great honour and extremely exciting,” Ms Boseley said.
“I’ve received so much support and encouragement since the nominees were nominated, from new workmates, old uni pals and family.
“While my imposter syndrome has never been higher, it’s really nice to see that the sleepless nights and tears of my last semester paid off.”
Matilda said in her last semester of university, she invested time in meaningful stories.
“I was very conscious to make sure I made the time to work on stories that excited me, and the cover issue I feel strongly about,” she said.
“I’m was well aware that once I got into the workplace it would be many years until I got that kind of freedom again.”
Matilda said the stories submitted for this award were focused on young women and the issues that were important to them.
“My pieces covered topics like safety on the streets, rape and sexual consent, and the Melbourne vegan extreme activist movement, which is led by women,” she said.
“One thing that I think my course and Mojo did really well was make sure I was able to report cross-platform, so I tried to show the diversity in my stories, entering a print piece, a podcast and a short documentary.
“I feel like Mojo really prepares young journos for the outside world, and lots of the students who come out of it into the workforce bring a really creative and self-starting approach to reporting.
“I think that's why we have been so well represented in journalism awards across the years.”
The New Daily journalist and former Mojo student editor Christiane Barro won back-to-back Student of the Year Walkleys in 2017 and 2018.
The winners will be announced at the Walkleys’ Mid-Year Celebration in Sydney on June 26, 2019.
