We are very pleased to announce that Monash Criminology’s Dr Asher Flynn has been named the 2018 Winner of the Capstone Editing Carer’s Travel Grant for Academic Women.
Capstone Editing recognise that a major requirement of academics is that they undertake research-related travel. Academics are expected to attend and present their work at interstate and international conferences regularly, and certain disciplines involve extensive fieldwork, sometimes in remote locations. This travel costs both time and money, with academics sometimes choosing to fund their own travel due to the intense pressure for career advancement through research and publication. For academics with young children, time spent away from home is often difficult and expensive to organise.
The funding will assist Dr Flynn to present a paper on image-based sexual abuse at the De-escalation Strategies and Socio-Legal Responses workshop she is co-facilitating in Onati, Spain, in 2019. By providing financial assistance for Dr Flynn and her son, Capstone Editing supports her intention to not only use this opportunity for presenting her valuable findings, but also for highlighting the importance of travelling for network development, for collaborating for career enhancement and for ultimately seizing the chances to do so, which are less available for primary carers.
