As a result of the generosity and vision of the late Francine V McNiff, the Social and Political Sciences Graduate Research Program in the Faculty of Arts will annually offer the Francine V McNiff PhD Scholarship in Criminology.
The late Francine V McNiff, was a Monash alumna (LLB 1976), former staff member, barrister, and the first female Magistrate in Victoria. Francine was passionate about the study of law and had deep connections with Monash. Scholarships will be awarded annually to up to two PhD applicants who are judged to demonstrate academic excellence.
The scholarship terms and conditions
The terms, conditions and level of the PhD scholarship will be the same as those for a Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend (formerly APA). The scholarship would be a Monash Departmental Scholarship – Francine V McNiff PhD Scholarship in Criminology. In addition to the PhD support provided by the Faculty of Arts and the University awardees will receive an additional $5,000 of targeted support annually.
The selection criteria will be that the applicant demonstrates academic excellence. In addition to this the applicant will demonstrate economic hardship in that, but for the award of the scholarship, it would be difficult or impossible to undertake the degree. On average two scholarships will be provided annually. Scholarships will not be awarded in the case that no applicant meets the criteria. In this case an extra scholarship/s may be awarded in the following year.
The application process will be the same as applying for a RTP scholarship (including an expression of interest) with the additional statement that attests to the scholarship’s value in facilitating the undertaking of the degree that would be difficult or impossible without the award of the scholarship.
A selection committee will be convened annually to determine award of the scholarship/s. The selection committee for the award of the scholarship/s will consist of one senior academic staff member from Criminology, the Director of the Social and Political Sciences Graduate Research Program, a senior academic staff member from the Faculty of Law and the Associate Dean (Graduate Research) from the Faculty of Arts.
Promotion of the scholarship
