I am very pleased to announce that Professor Farzad Sharifian has been awarded the Faculty of Arts Dean’s Award for Excellence in Higher Degree by Research Supervision for 2013. This is a highly competitive award, demonstrating excellence in quality supervision and the completion of HDR candidates.
Professor Sharifian has not only recruited and completed a large number of PhD students since 2007, he has also worked diligently to foster a cohort of postgraduate researchers in his discipline. Professor Sharifian is currently the main supervisor for 8 PhD projects (including one currently under examination) and the associate supervisor for 1 PhD project.
Since 2007 he has supervised 8 PhD candidates to successful completion. This has been achieved by establishing English as an International Language as an HDR discipline at Monash, instituting an annual postgraduate conference and organizing international and national conferences that enable HDR students to present their work to the academic community.
Quality of supervision is an important factor in the criteria for this award and Professor Sharifian has demonstrated a strong commitment to critically aware and reflective practice in research supervision.
Several of his students have published in international journals and, of the PhD students who have completed under his supervision, none have been required to undertake major revision and resubmission of the thesis. These are significant achievements and the award is well deserved.
