Mobilising young women’s leadership and advocacy

The project will help young women create and sustain partnerships, networks and coalitions at the community, national, regional and global level, to help represent the issues affecting young women’s rights in sexual and reproductive health and violence against women.

The project builds on the work established by the World Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) and will focus on nine countries across the Asia Pacific: Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

With close cooperation with World YWCA, the Monash Gender, Peace & Security (GPS) Centre – housed in the Faculty of Arts – will undertake a study to support young women in the region. Monash GPS academics will undertake research activities and will provide young women with knowledge and skills that will enable them to lead a positive change in their community; through capability-building activities such as the sharing of information in human rights, sexual and reproductive health rights, violence against women and gender. They also aim to support young women in the Asia Pacific as a driving force in influencing women’s rights policies.

Monash GPS and World YWCA will use several strategies to implement these goals, for example: empowering young women via the Rise Up! training model; creating and implementing a mentoring model; building partnerships with services providers within the community; and increasing advocacy activities through engaging women at the community, national, regional and global level.
