This Focus Program is organised around four themes: The Sensor Society; Media and Cultural Economies; Creative Cities and Spaces; Asian Cultural Economies.

Culture, Media, Economy (CME) is a response to the current conjuncture in which new financial and business models, technologies, socio-cultural dynamics and geo-political configurations have radically transformed our understandings and practices of culture, media and economy. Though faced with a unique contemporary conjuncture CME draws on long standing disciplinary approaches from the political economy of the media, cultural studies, communications studies and critical cultural policy studies. CME also looks to emergent research around social and locative media, ubiquitous computing and the city, labour in the cultural economy, and the post-neoliberal agenda.

CME Focus Professor Mark Andrejevic has recently been appointed to the School of Media, Film & Journalism and leads the Sensor Society projects of Algorithmic Accountability, Political Bots and the Public Sphere, Curatorial Cultures and The Networked City. CME has a strong policy focus with links to UNESCO and other global cultural policy forums, as well as Creative Victoria, Tasmanian Creative Island, Renew Australia and Collingwood Arts Precinct. CME is leading an industry partnership around using creative workspaces and digital infrastructure to connect cultural industries in Melbourne, Shanghai and Shenzhen.
